East West Interconnector E.W.I.P


ABCO Marine (Irl) Ltd were contracted by ABB as specialist marine subcontractor on East West Interconnector Project (EWIP) for EirGrid Plc. The East West Interconnector runs between Deeside in north Wales and Woodland, County Meath in Ireland. Approximately 260km in length, the underground (75-km) and undersea (186-km) link has the capacity to transport enough energy to power 300,000 homes. EWIP Project was awarded Engineers Ireland Project of the year 2013, with ABCO Marine (Irl) Ltd responsible for the cable landing design and operations in Rush, Co Dublin.

Project Information

2 x 315mm and 1 x 150mm Outside Diameter Pipe and associated fittings were placed from Ch-0+005 on shore to ‘Low Water Mark’ (LWM) at Ch0+335 in an open trench with the pipe lengths placed in sections with concrete kennels placed.

2 x 315mm and 1 x 150mm Outside Diameter Pipe and associated fittings were prepared in a single pipe string, with special concrete designed to incorporate and retain the three pipe length. Towed 15 nautical miles and placed from Ch- 0+335 at ‘Low Water Mark’ (LWM) to inlet point Ch0+865 in a marine trench with the pipe string placed using the ‘float and sink’ method.

Mobilised C59 Emotion Jack-Up Barge c/w Long Reach Excavator, Backhoe Dredger c/w rock hammer, Work Tug and Crew Transfer Vessels to support the marine excavations through boulder clay and rock, with material side cast for backfill. Excavation of trench in 15m deep water, with level control maintained from GPS dig system.

Trench backfill incorporated, pre-cast concrete kennels on the shore section, with side cast material used for all backfill.

Hydrographic and topographical surveys of the existing seabed and beach were completed, hydrographic survey were also utilised during the project, and both pre/post sink surveys of the marine trench.

ABCO Divers Ltd – commercial diving company, supported connection of the marine and shore pipe sections, and installation of concrete mattress and . With diving operations in water depth of 15m deep, with dive spread mounted on C59 Emotion Jack-Up barge for construction processes.

ABCO Divers Ltd and Support Vessel in attendance for the cable pulling operations, ensuring entry of cable and pull wires attachment.
